Internationalisation and Localisation Cost Estimations

Cost estimations for product internationalisation and localisation

Customers around the world expect to have access to a variety of products and information, not only on-demand but preferably in their native language. By localising your products, website and marketing campaigns, you are building a bridge to your target customers and making your brand more memorable in the local markets.

Software and documentation translation costs

Software localisation and documentation translations are charged per source text word, the price per word depends on the source-target language combination.

Regarding timing, the general rate of translation is about 2000 words/day plus review 6000-7000 words per day. If the documentation contains many graphics, the daily word count can be as low as 1500 words per day. Review in this case includes:

  • for localisation: testing the translated locales in the software
  • for documentation and other types of documents: style, layout and DTP

Internationalisation consulting costs

Having designed the internationalisation schemes for several software products, I can support you in finding the perfect way to localise your software. Perfect in this case means with the least cost to the development team and the most cost-effective and easily maintainable way to actually translate to different languages and be able to easily add more languages later on. My consulting rates for internationalisation are based on the specific professional requirements of a project and are charged per hour or per day. Please feel free to ask for an individual quote.

When taking into account that 90% of customers would choose a native language website or application if it is available, and over 40% never purchase in a different language, localising your products and all connected documentation and documents should be well worth the extra effort.
